CASE STUDIES
Retexturing A5111, Derby. April 2013
In August 2012 as a result of SCRIM Survey Results and vehicle accidents at this location on the busy A5111 ring road, Pavestech were asked by Mark Evans, Senior Highway Maintenance Technician, Derby City Council, to carry out a site inspection in order to ascertain if the road surface was suitable for retexturing in order to improve the skid resistance properties.
Works were organized to cause least disruption and delay to the travelling public and commerce, with daytime working between 0930hrs and 1530hrs for the majority of the site and evening working at the busy northern end of the site at the junction with Uttoxeter New Road. Works were completed in a total of 6 shifts.
Significant improvements in microtexture (skid resistance) has been achieved at at this site. This improves the safety of the surface, gives it a renewed working life and can have significant effects on reducing the risk of skidding accidents, especially in wet conditions.
After completion of the works the comments from Derby City Council was: “Excellent work overall, very professional from the initial on-site walk over to final completion of the works. This was also present with the subcontracted road marking works, the main contractor was present at all times ensuring the works were completed ahead of time and well within budget. The contractor listened to our requests and provided good advice when necessary. The final results were very impressive and we are pleased with the results as are the local residents.”
Alice Springs & Gold Coast Airports – Australia
In 2007 Pavestech who were working as consultants for Blastrac the equipment manufacturer were asked to visit Australia to give advise and give technical support to the Australian contractor at several problem sites. The main runway at Alice was built in 1991, since then, no rubber removal operation had taken place. That is, 16 years of rubber deposit. The runway rubber was removed using the same equipment we use here in the UK. See attached testimonial.
Also rubber removal was carried out at Gold Coast Airport, see testimonial.
North Ayrshire Council Retexturing Trial
The locations chosen for this process / trial were picked as they were seen by North Ayrshire Council as being representative of the type of challenge being experienced by this Council's Roads and Transportation Service.
Fairly old and well polished surfacing in a relatively high volume high stress situation and an SMA surface which due to the light traffic conditions still exhibited significant amounts of binder film on the running surface and consequently a lower than desirable skid resistance.
Pavestech's HVIM process was selected after site inspection and assessment and was seen by the Council as a more economic method of achieving an acceptable running surface at both locations. We were also aware that the chosen process was environmentally friendly, any material being recovered being readily recyclable.
This report details the sites, material types, textures and skid resistance before and after the retexturing works and a brief explanation of how the process works.
The works were carried out in a methodical manner to time and within budget constraints with a minimal impact on the travelling public.
All in all we are delighted with this quiet, clean, unobtrusive and economic process for carriageway retexturing or remedial treatment and have no hesitation in recommending "Pavestech". Roads and Transportation Services, North Ayrshire Council.
Northamptonshire Retexturing to improve road safety
MGWSP Northamptonshire Highways have now been using Pavestech’s retexturing process for several years and see it as the preffered option for roads with low SCRIM which are otherwise sound. See report for full details.
